Psychological Distress After a Work Accident – When Can Therapy Be Helpful?
As a psychotherapist with many years of experience in treating traumatic stress reactions and providing psychotherapeutic support after work accidents, I support people in coping with the psychological consequences of distressing events and regaining stability in everyday and professional life.
A work accident can change life from one moment to the next. In addition to physical injuries, psychological distress may also occur and can significantly affect everyday life, professional life and personal well-being.
Psychological consequences can occur not only after severe accidents. Threatening situations, experiences of violence at work or witnessing a serious accident involving another person can also trigger distressing reactions.
In my private practice in Berlin, I offer psychotherapy for adults and also treat people who require psychotherapeutic support within the psychotherapy procedure of employers’ liability insurance associations and accident insurance funds.
What psychological consequences can occur after a work accident?
After a distressing event, many people initially react with uncertainty, tension or increased alertness. These reactions are often a normal way of processing an extraordinary situation.
However, if symptoms persist over a longer period of time or significantly affect everyday life, psychotherapeutic treatment can be helpful.
Possible symptoms may include:
- recurring distressing memories,
- nightmares,
- anxiety and panic,
- inner restlessness and increased startle responses,
- concentration difficulties,
- sleep difficulties,
- avoidance behaviour,
- depressive moods,
- feelings of guilt or shame,
- difficulties returning to everyday working life.
When is psychotherapy helpful?
Psychotherapeutic support can be helpful when the psychological consequences of a work accident affect everyday life, professional life or interpersonal relationships.
The aim of therapy is to understand and process the psychological consequences of what happened and to develop individual coping strategies. The focus is not on suppressing distressing memories, but on finding a helpful way of dealing with them and sustainably reducing emotional distress.
Early support can help prevent chronic symptoms and make it easier to return to everyday and professional life.
My therapeutic approach
I work with cognitive behavioural therapy and evidence-based methods. Treatment is guided by your individual symptoms, personal resources and therapeutic goals.
For traumatic stress reactions and trauma-related disorders, specialised trauma-focused methods such as Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Imagery Rescripting and Reprocessing Therapy (IRRT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) may also be used, depending on the individual situation. Which methods are appropriate in each individual case depends on your symptoms, your goals and the course of therapy.
A trusting and respectful therapeutic relationship is important to me. Together, we develop a treatment plan tailored to your personal situation.
Psychotherapy through employers’ liability insurance associations and accident insurance funds
Psychological symptoms after a work accident or an experience of violence at work may, under certain conditions, be treated within the psychotherapy procedure of employers’ liability insurance associations and accident insurance funds.
Therapy can help process the psychological consequences of the event and support the return to everyday and professional life.
I would be happy to discuss with you whether treatment within this psychotherapy procedure may be suitable for your individual situation.
Online and in person
Therapy can take place both in my practice in Berlin and online. In an initial consultation, we can discuss together which treatment format is suitable for your personal situation.
